Our work

East and Southern Africa

Terrorism and violent extremism related threats in this region are wide-ranging. It reflects the region’s diversity, which varies in ethnicity, socio-economic conditions and political structures. The primary networks posing a threat are religiously driven, violent extremist groups. These groups continue to evolve in their recruitment strategies, capitalizing on social media platforms to attract younger followers, while continuing to infiltrate local communities, exploit religious narratives, and fuel anti-government grievances.

Our focus is to continue undermining violent extremists’ group’s radicalization and recruitment efforts within the region. We also work towards empowering civil society groups, interfaith groups and various other communities at the grassroots level, while supporting the implementation of effective policies, strategies and CVE National Action Plans in the region. As these groups evolve, we also stay informed and research ways to strengthen local interventions and tackle push and pull factors in order to prevent radicalization leading to violent extremism.
