Consultant - Researcher

Hedayah’s Research and Analysis department is currently leading research activities on a global project related to education and countering extremism and violent extremism. This role will be dedicated to undertaking and supporting research activities on this project.

Key Responsibilities

This is a project-related role, contributing to a major project on education and countering extremism and violent extremism. The Researcher will be responsible for the following specific duties at the direction of the Program Manager:

  • Conduct desk research / literature review;
  • Support and conduct primary research (i.e. interviews);
  • Conduct qualitative analysis of primary research (i.e. coding using qualitative analysis software);
  • Support drafting of related research deliverables as needed.

Further, they will be expected to:

  • Report directly to the Program Manager as to the proper execution of their assigned activities;
  • Support specific project-related activities when required, such as updating work-plans or other project-related administrative tasks, under the supervision of the Program Manager and in coordination with the wider team.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Qualifications:

  • An advanced level university degree (Masters Degree or academic equivalent) in International Relations, Political Science, Social Sciences, Terrorism Studies or related field. (Please note that current graduate students may also be considered.)

Work Experience:

  • Previous relevant experience in conducting primary (qualitative) and secondary research activities;
  • Knowledge of and/or relevant experience related to education and countering extremism and violent extremism is strongly desirable;
  • Knowledge of issues related to countering violent extremism is desirable;
  • Ability in managing logistics related to research activities;
  • Experience of working in an international setting is desirable;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders including governments, policy makers, community leaders and actors, NGOs, practitioners and experts is desirable;
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team is required;
  • Ability to manage internal and external relationships with diplomacy, cultural sensitivity and discretion is required.

Ability to meet deadlines on assigned activities in a fast-paced environment is required.

  • Excellent command of written and oral English. Knowledge of second language (e.g. Arabic) is an asset;

Special Considerations

  • The position will be part-time (required hours subject to agreement but minimum 20 hours per week) for a period of approximately 3-4 months, starting in May 2024 (or as soon as possible);
  • The position will be remote / online only for all activities;
