The National Coordinator of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), General Garba Laka, today said security agencies are more than ever united in tackling evolving threats of violent extremism, popularly known as terrorism.

General Laka spoke when he hosted a significant pre-review workshop focused on the Policy Framework and National Action Plan for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (P/CVE) in Nigeria.

The event, which took place at the Centre’s headquarters, brought together key stakeholders from across various sectors, including government agencies, civil society organizations, academia, and international partners.

In his opening address, the National Coordinator of the NCTC, Adamu Laka, welcomed the participants, particularly Ms. Anna Sherburn, the Deputy Executive Director of Hedayah, and His Excellency Ambassador Gautier Mignot, the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria and ECOWAS.

Laka expressed appreciation for their commitment to the cause of preventing violent extremism and enhancing national security.

“This workshop marks a significant step in our collective commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security framework.

We are united by a common goal: to enhance our strategies in addressing the evolving threat of violent extremism”, Laka stated.

Laka emphasized the need for Nigeria to continuously adapt to the ever-changing landscape of extremism.

He highlighted that the nature of threats has evolved significantly over the years, requiring dynamic, proactive, and effective responses.

He also noted that the review of the 2017 Policy Framework and National Action Plan offers a timely opportunity to assess its effectiveness, identify strengths, and address gaps in the current approach.

The workshop was described as a critical moment for stakeholders to offer valuable insights and recommendations for updating the national strategy to combat extremism.

Laka pointed out that the fight against violent extremism requires the collective efforts of not only government bodies but also civil society, religious leaders, community representatives, and international partners.

In conclusion, Laka extended his gratitude to the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, for his strategic leadership in combatting violent extremism in the country.

He also thanked Hedayah International Centre for Countering Violent Extremism for their continued support and collaboration in advancing the national P/CVE agenda.

The workshop, which is expected to yield critical recommendations, is part of ongoing efforts to build a more resilient and secure Nigeria.
