UNGA Side Event

Advancing Global Rehabilitation & Reintegration Efforts

Date Tuesday, September 24 2024
Location USA

Hedayah has been at the forefront of the global efforts to prevent and counter extremism and violent extremism, empowering communities and governments to foster tolerance, stability, and security.
In line with this mission, Hedayah hosts an annual side event during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Week and the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum in New York. These side events are designed to emphasize the critical need for sustained and coordinated international action to combat extremism and violent extremism. They provide a platform for collaboration, the exchange of insights, lessons learned, and the exploration of future pathways.

Our UNGA 24 event aims to set the course for a future where rehabilitation and reintegration efforts are increasingly effective, efficient, and sustainable, thus contributing to more resilient and peaceful societies. By sharing Hedayah’s global, systemic and comprehensive approaches to rehabilitation and reintegration, Hedayah aims to inspire increased rehabilitation and reintegration efforts amongst relevant countries, organizations and stakeholders based on holistic evidence-based strategies to support individuals affected by extremism with a special focus on women and children connected with countries outside of Syria and Iraq.

  • Provide insights into the challenges faced in the development and implementation of repatriation, rehabilitation and reintegration programs, with a thorough analysis of key success factors and available support.
  • Emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach in rehabilitation and reintegration efforts, addressing the need for tailored interventions, the challenges of intersectionality among different stakeholders, and identifying nuanced opportunities for collaboration whilst sharing locally led solutions that have been successfully implemented in various contexts.
  • Launch Hedayah’s Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Minors Toolkit, discussing the good practice areas that should be considered when implementing programs related to the rehabilitation and reintegration of minors based on their individual needs, whilst considering differentiating factors such as age and gender.
  • Raise awareness among participants and stakeholders regarding effective rehabilitation and reintegration practices in prison, with a focus on how the ASEAN handbook resource supports decision-makers, policymakers and practitioners, and social workers in designing effective Deradicalization, Rehabilitation and Reintegration (DRR) programs.
